I hope it lasts... Apparently, I have had a golden horseshoe up my arse for the last few days... Drove with the twins back to Missouri to get them situated in school. Drove straight through to KC (gooood BBQ), doing my best to make good time. Stopped by a trooper in New Mexico, about 1:30 in the morning. 32 over the limit... Talked him into a warning. Passed through Texas (good speed limits in that state) unscathed. Slept for an hour after the sun rose (and delirium had set in) in Liberal, KS. Got rolling across the farmland and made the acquaintance of a Kansas Highway Patrol Officer who got me at 17 over. After a friendly chat about the challenges of the drive, and the destination, he too, sent me on my way with a warning. Out of respect to him, I drove the speed limit the rest of the way through Kansas (which worked out well, as we passed another patrolman and his radar down the road...). This would have been an adequate amount of good fortune, but, there was more... After dropping off one childs boyfriend in St. Louis for his return flight, I had to return to Fayette without GPS or a map. I thought I could remember all the country roads and make my way back. Well, yes and no... Wound up driving through the farmland after sunset on back highways. The disappearing light my only guide. I was running out of gas, and doubt began to creep in, so I called the girls to have them get me directions from where I was, back to them, only to discover my phone was dying (and my charger was with them). I got a text right before my phone died, with completely useless directions. So, I continued, using only the barest sense of where I was trying to go and where I actually was. Lo and behold, I found another highway that turned in the direction I needed to go, and driving along rolling hills in the darkness, with a full orange moon in my rearview mirror, driving over hills where I couldnt see the road ahead (like riding a roller coaster) until I crested the hill, with bugs coming at me like fireflies, I found my way back. Whew! But, the adventures werent over... Next day, I discovered that the commuter airport I was to fly out of, was much further than I understood it to be, coupled with a late departure because the twins were in a meeting with the Dean, I was late for my flight. Really late. And we got fouled up on the directions. So, I arrived at the airport 45 minutes after the flight was to have departed, hoping I could salvage something and get home, since I had court this morning. Despite the beautiful blue skies and puffy clouds in Columbia, MO, weather in Chicago had magically delayed my flight. Which I made. Thanks to the layover I had in Chicago, despite the late departure, there was actually time to arrive there late and still make my flight, which I did, barely. As stressful as the trip was, I am incredibly thankful that things just seemed to work out for me. All capped off with the warm embrace of my beloved wife. Now, if I can just keep it going through court Friday...
