I hope my ankle get better by Friday. I cant afford to miss our by monthly complex case clinics. These are meetings I hold with stakeholders such as pediatricians, psychologists, health workers, social workers, the police, school authorities, carers, recognized entities etc etc all in a bid to review our work practices, and to discuss better ways to address the challenges faced by our children and young people in Queensland. With more resources pumped into the Child Protection system after the New Carmody report it will change our approaches to the way we protect children in Queensland, and will also bring a lot of reforms to the Child Protection Act and the Juvenile Justice Act which we implement as legislative officials in the place of the Chief Executive. Queensland alone may spend over 600 million dollars a year protecting children, and more resources will be pumped into the system to cater for early intervention into Child Protection matters. The model we use here are mostly scientific and clinical approaches which is so different from what we do back in salone. Here we continue to build the institutions and stronger service delivery structure to support children, young people and their families. In terms of legal matters they are separated from the Magistrate courts, hence we have a childrens court presided over by magistrates well equipped in the necessary legislations to deal with their matters. When convicted they serve their time in detention facilities equipped with educational and technical support, and also serve their therapeutic needs as well. When they make an effort to progress no convictions are recorded on them and it does not carry over into any future criminal records post18 years. We do not make a politician out of young people here as we normally do in Salone. We deal with their matters on a case by case bases. I had always been concerned about the approaches we employ to support children and young people in Salone. We mostly turn them into politicians rather than developing the institutions and structures to support their daily care and protection needs. If we do not change our ways we will only continue to create a toxic situation for ourselves which will only come back and bite us on our bam big time. In fact its already the case.
