I hope the death of Robin Williams teaches us a variety of lessons. One lesson should be that suicide is NOT always about a person intentionally punishing those left behind. This used to be the smug mantra while dismissing suicide as a selfish and vindictive act. I hope more will realize that suicide can also be an act of sheer desperation, despair and hopeless. My heart really aches for those who have sunk to such black levels of despair and often suffer in silence. I think one reason Robins death hits us all so hard is because he always seemed so full of life and apparent joy and mirth. I also hope that certain self-righteous Christians who used to derisively dismiss suicide as a sin and nothing more are forever silenced. I would also like to add that those who call Robin a coward are in my book, contemptable and ignorant. I personally think there is in fact a dark courage born in the depths of despair and not cowardice as some claim. Suicide is very complex, I believe, and those who dismiss it simplisticly are themselves simple.
