I hope wherever you are tonight that you are warm and happy! I worked for hours in a very cold greenhouse, took care of six gregarious fat-bottomed chickens and one ailing dog... and got a gallon of ginger ale (or as I like to call it, some Im Not Gonna Get Sick Ale) going. For your own ginger ale, start with a ginger bug, a fermented mixture of grated ginger, sugar and water (Kathy: I saved 1/2 of my bug for you, just in case). This takes 3 days on my kitchen counter, but its fun to watch it fizz and grow. Youll next make a wort for your ale out of minced ginger, molasses, more sugar and water (OK, I added cardamom because, well, I love it--you can individualize this brew as you see fit, too), and then add the juice of a fresh lime. Then its just a matter of allowing it to sit for another 3 days on your kitchen counter, then straining and bottling it. Easy-peasy. In other news, we have a Severe Weather Alert for the Great Pacific Northwest, with cold temperatures, wind, and snow in the mountains. We used to call that winter. :)
