I imagine that for some women at least infertility is a manifestation of a genetic fault. What then are the ethics of enabling a woman to potentially pass on this infertility to another generation? I do know a couple of women whose lives have been enhanced by the availability of IVF, yet i have still not heard any public debate about whether the resources spent on IVF might be better allocated elsewhere in the health and social care system. this is a very difficult and emotional debate but isnt the basic evolutionary principle that some genetic lines die out? What might we be storing up by enabling these gene lines to propagate?
