I just checked my mailbox and guess what, I received a glossy full color mailer from OBEE. On the cover are a whole bunch of adorable children and Andy Andrews smiling face. I read on with great interest as Andy told me that for a yes vote and $50 per 100,000assessed value of my home I could get a new hospital in OB! Also, my property values would increase so when I sell I will be rich! If I dont sell, my heirs could be rich! I was kind of thrilled until my brain became engaged and I really read what he was trying to pitch. I dont want to sell - I like OB just as it is. If my property increases in value so do my taxes. He didnt mention the sales taxes or lodging tax or what happens in the event of a disaster, or that a city school system just adds another layer of taxation. He didnt mention that all attempts to open a health care facility have been blocked by other health care providers. He did try to make the connection between a city school system and a hospital, but it was pretty vague and full of sweeping statements. He made a statement that local economic growth is a direct result of city school systems - really? and then tried to back it up with the example of Saraland. Mr. Andrews, Saraland is a whole lot different than OB. Our local economy is tourism and unless you plan on bringing in large employers where will you get the population growth and tax base to support another hospital. Wow! This ad must have cost a lot of money, and it sure is pretty. But sorry Mr. Andrews, Im not buying it. VOTE NO!
