I just dont think Reza Aslan made his case in this interview with CNN. Ive read so many commentators saying that he demolished those reporters and how stupid CNN was. I actually felt they held their own quite well given journalists general lack of knowledge of religion. I think their questions about violence and the treatment of women were totally valid. Its not like they asked, But arent Quakers fomenting violence in Northeastern United States? Ive met Reza a few times. Wonderful person and talent scholar. Which is all the more reason Im sad that he cant admit the problem with Islam. But in this case hes speaking like an apologist. Much of what he says is true, but what he doesnt want to admit is the other truth that there is a pattern of contemporary Islam and geo-political conflict and violence. There is also widespread mistreatment of women (to put it mildly) even in Indonesia. Christians need to speak out against Christian theocrats and Muslims need to speak out against violent extremists and the general mistreatment of women in Islam, not deny that theres a problem.
