I just finished an interesting article on Matthew 25:31-46 that asks the question: Who was Jesus referring to when he speaks of these least brethren of mine? The modern interpretation tells us Jesus is exhorting all of us to take care of other unfortunate people. And indeed I believe he is. But the context of chapters 24 and 25 in Matthew show he is speaking to his apostles and that the least brothers are the apostles and the missionaries that will be sent out to the world to preach the Gospel. Compare also Matthew 10:16-42. What this served to do, then, is extremely reinforce the important mission of the Church, and to emphasize that when Jesus says to the apostles, He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me - he really means that. The sheep received his word, the goats rejected it.
