I just finished reading “From the Farm to the Occupation of Japan” by Ken Patchett. I really enjoyed this book. It was very informative, not only about serving on a ship in combat, but also about a sailor’s life in general. I met the author, Ken Patchett, several years ago while in Peru. We took a small passenger boat up the Amazon to a lodge at the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers which forms the Amazon River. Sooner or later when travelers meet, the conversation will always go to “Where have you been”. When Africa came up, it struck a cord for both of us. We both had been there several times, and planned on returning several times. Ken told me that he had authored two books, one was “From the Farm to the Occupation of Japan”, the other was “Africa, Again, Again and Again” which was was about his travels in Southern Africa. I managed to locate a copy of his African book some time ago. I consider it to be one of the best I have ever read about going on Safari in the 1990’s / 2000’s. I could really relate to his experiences. I just found his WWII book on Amazon, and started reading as soon as it arrived. Ken passed away in 2008, but to me he still lives on through the two books he wrote. I’ve included a page from his WWII book. I think it speaks quite clearly about Ken and his generation.
