I just finished reading Going Clear, Lawrence Wrights book on L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. First of all, I highly recommend it as an outstanding example of page-turning journalism. Its completely gripping. Also, parts of it are downright scary. What the Church of Scientology does to its members is clearly physical, mental, and emotional abuse. The fact that it, of all faiths, has tax-exempt status is shameful. The IRS essentially gave up because of all the lawsuits and harassment that the Church waged against it. The book also paints Tom Cruise in a very bad light. He has greatly benefited materially from unpaid labor by Scientology members. The Hollywood part of the book, while interesting, was less compelling for me than the fates of the many non-famous people whose lives were ruined by the church.
