I just finished reading Phillip Chapman Leshs book, Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead. Pretty much in tears the last few chapters. I bought a hardcover copy back when it came out, went to a book signing with Gail and somewhere have an autographed copy... It was the 2nd or 3rd time I met Phil, who I now have the honor of calling my friend. But I never read it, until now (and via a Kindle edition, easier on my older eyes). What was extra wonderful about reading it in 2013/14 was that so may of the characters in the book are now characters in my life, some I know more than others, and consider friends. Phil and Jill, Grahame, Brian, Sam, Rosie, Manasha, Gloria, Vincent, Big Steve, and so many others I now know that are in the book. That was fun, and a layer of surrealism. Lots of synchronicity too, as I would read a section, and then hear Phil or the Terrapin Family Band play a song that was mentioned, or Id end up being in the place referenced, or someone coming up to me and starting a conversation about that time and place or show I had just read about... Its a very personal book, with lots of great stories and insights only Phil could share, with wit and honesty and love and candor. A grateful read, I highly recommend it! (bummer that the Kindle version does not include the pictures from the hardcover edition!) Next up: Either Rosie or Steves book... flipping a coin, as both are already on my Kindle!
