I just had an over half-minute dispute with Microsoft Word Spell Check about the spelling of “16.” I claimed it was spelled “sixsteen” but Spell Check scratched a squiggly wound below this spelling. Much to my horror, I discovered that to wipe the bloody scratch off my otherwise pristine white screen, I must change the spelling to “sixteen.” But for the Love of God, I pleaded, it sounds like there is an “s” after the ‘x’! Let me spell it the way it sounds! “X” is not a real letter anyway! Alas, to no avail, Spell Check remained deaf to my pleas. Finally, I realized the errors of my ways and slouched in my chair, utterly humiliated. And to think, in elementary school, I used to be the Spelling Bee Champion.
