I just heard a diatribe about Syria and I wanted to ensure everyone is tracking to score in the conflict. There are no “good guys” or “bad guys” in this conflict, just varying degrees of evil. Assad for all his evil, brutality, and barbarism is a religious and social moderate who wants to maintain the status quo dictatorship that was passed down to him by his father. He is a brutal abusive strong man but he is universally brutal. The opposition is a diverse group of individuals united only by their hatred of Assad. There are some Shia and Kurds who have been oppressed for years but there is also a large bloc of Islamists who are fighting against Syria’s moderate culture due to it being seen as pro-western. The Islamists have close ties to Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood. If the Islamists come to power they will tear apart what moderation exists in Syria and prey on the Coptic Christians the same way they have in Egypt and Iraq. Syria is a fight predominantly between two evils, chose the third option and stay on the sideline.
