I just heard of Jerry Dunbars passing today from a text from his son Scott. Jerry and my father, Cy were great friends, all the way back into the early 50s. He was so unique...never flashy...EXTREMELY brilliant in common sense and mechanics...always sharing his opinion whether you wanted to hear it or not (LOL). I valued the stories and recollections he shared with me ever since I was a young kid. I had the privilege to haul his race car for the 1984 race season when we raced in the IMSA circuit and toured with the IROC Series. The ol blue suburban pulling that ol Wells Cargo trailer that he bought used, always got us where we needed to go. I would kind of cower my head down as the Lowenbrau and Porsche teams would look over from their million dollar operations and watch us set up in the pits. Then, THEY all came over to say Hi to Jerry...they ALL knew and respected this grass roots racer (Fittipaldi, Rahal, Foyt, Andretti, Hobbs, Bell, Fox, Newman, Mandeville, Walter Payton, Dallenbach, Ribbs, Labonte, Granatelli...excuse the spelling)...I will never forget it! Between my own father Cy and Jerry AJ Dunbar...a young kid could not have had better mentors. Our deepest condolences to Ortus and the entire family, he will be greatly missed.
