I just left my grandfather after delivering him his nightly medicine. Sitting in my car, I making a quick phone call before I have to drive. I notice after five minutes he is still standing in the doorway staring at me, I roll down the window. Me: Grandpa! Im on the phone I didnt want to drive and talk! Grandpa: What do you mean? Are you not coming in? And wheres your jacket? Me: Its 90° out, wheres your jacket question. Grandpa: I dont need a jacket its warm out! Me: And what do ya mean by am I coming in? We just did your medication together, I just left! Grandpa: I know! I know! I didnt mean it. Me: Go to bed its past your bedtime its almost 7pm. Grandpa: I know that sweethearts , I just want to watch you drive away. Me: But Im on the phone and I dont know how long Ill be. Grandpa: Thats okay, Ill wait. I get in the car and pretend to drive away. He closes the door as I pull a spot away from the house, park and continue my call. I see his light shut off. Guess he decided to go to bed after all. So much has changed in the last 15 years with him but things like that will always remain the same. Hes still that typical grandparent watching at the door.
