I just left the #BeyondTheLights #ATL premiere. Let me say off the top I thought the film was wonderfully done. I went in not knowing much but I think that Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the female lead, is a delightful and versatile actress and I think that Nate Parker, the male lead, is one of the most underrated African American actors out there. I have yet to see either of them in a film I did not enjoy. The writer and director of Beyond the Lights, Gina Prince-Bythewood, who is best known for the classic Love & Basketball is also someone whose work has yet to let me down. So as stated before I went in without knowing much about the plot but what I did know was that all of the elements were in place to make this a delightful film and to my cinematic joy none of those elements disappointed. The acting, the pace, the storytelling, the cinematography it all came together to push forward a throughly entertaining and captivating narrative. What I found splendid about the movie was that though it was a love story it was also making a statement about fame, compromise, the losing and finding of self, medias overreach, and the obsessive and fickle nature of fans in the modern social media dominated world we live in. If you like romance, if you like stories pushed forward by the quality of the writing and acting, if you like films that make statements beyond the promo blurb then I would highly recommend this film. It was also a joy to run into and share words, handshakes and hugs with Michelle Kitchens, Amyr Heard, Catherine Riddick Tyler, Cliff Robinson, Yaminah Ahmad, Verona Jones (thanks for the invite), Verbal Slick and Jade Jones. Also I randomly ended up sitting next to Tameka Raymond who I shared a few laughs with.
