I just met a guy who beat out my discussion about nuclear proliferation with an Italian Colonel Tank Battalion Commander on a train ride from Florence to Rome in 2005. In Cambodia I met a driver who had an astounding tale to tell. A guerrilla fighter during the Cambodia Civil War, he was recruited in the following manner: We want you to find land mines. If you dont want to we kill you. He was 9 at the time. He survived the conflict but not without the emotional scars that go with the deeds common in this type of war. We wont go into more detail about that. What I found amazing was he he applied himself after the war. He became a humanitarian and has applied the first skills he learned during his military career. He travels the land finding and disarming land mines.....by hand. We had a nice discussion about land mines and their differences. His favorite land mine is a gas mine from WWI. Not sure how those mines got there but I suspect they were surplus that ended up on the black market. These particular mines releases a paralyzingly gas that isnt fatal but can cause long term illness. He doesnt like it for that reason but rather for the challenge in disarming it. Ive got to say hes probably one of the best in the business. To turn a life of evil into one of great good is as noble as it gets. A true hero.
