I just ordered my upgraded iPhone. The guy in the AT&T store worked really hard to get me to pay the monthly payments on the phone, instead of paying for it all up front. When I calculated it out, it was almost $700 more for the phone to pay it out in monthly payments. He tried to explain to me that the advantage was that I could switch phones after 18 months, instead of fulfilling my two year contract. First of all, that extra six months is not worth that much... But also, the contract indicated that it was only $325 to buy out early, and that amount decreases by $10 each month I have the phone. Bottom line, be sure to do the math before you buy into the monthly payment. Your situation may be different based upon carrier, or even the AT&T plan that you are on. I did notice that if you order online it also defaults to the monthly payment.
