I just posted the following on the Montana Dept of Transportation and hope others in the community might want to join with suggestions/call to action concerning Hwy 89 right now with the dangerous presence of bison and elk along the roads: With the extended snow fall this season and the bison and elk (among others) in hundreds roaming Hwy 89 (where I live), something needs to be done for the safety of all involved—human and animal! Please consider lowering the speed limit during high migratory times to 55 for all on this road (or permanently) and add extra signage after Yankee Jim Canyon—beyond the cattle guard reminding drivers of the fact of heavy animal migration (perhaps at mile marker 12 and mile 6) heading towards Gardiner. Also, I think with the low presence of law enforcement patrolling in this highway area, perhaps a electronic checking your speed sign (that shows how fast a driver around mile marker 8 would be a good visual reminder for those not paying attention. (NPS has one before lower Mammoth that I have seen work to slow people down) PLEASE DO SOMETHING before anymore bison die (3 hit and killed/put down within 2 miles of my home in the past three days) or any serious injury or death comes to local and/or visiting drivers/passengers who are starting to increase their numbers as the season approaches. Thank you for your time and I look forward to seeing some action taken.
