I just read that Todd Rundgren is one of the headliners at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. WTF? Listen, I know that the word "folk" music means a lot of things to a different people, and the definition is changing - but really? Todd Rundgren? What is going to do, acoustic synthesizers? Sorry, I do not want to sound like an old fart, but this is NOT folk music. Aside from Todd Rundgren they have an incredible lineup this year - David Bromberg is back, Asleep at the Wheel, and even an electric Richard Thompson Trio seems to fit the spirit of Philly. They also have some great young bands - Runa, Caravan of Thieves, the Stray Birds, Burning Bridget Cleary and the Caroline Chocolate Drops. But adding Todd Rundgren to the mix? Why is that necessary? Nothing against Todd, he is a very talented artists/producer - but does he belong as a headliner at Philly? I hope he proves me wrong, I would be happy to eat my words.
