I just read that the Great Dame of Lebanese music, Sabah (affectionately called Sabbouha by her fans), passed away today at the age of 87. Her voice accompanied me during many a sleepless night when, as an undergraduate at Thessaloniki University, I first came in contact with the Arab culture and I started learning Arabic and traveling eastwards. That contact was a defying element in my personal journey. I still remember my students apartment in central Thessaloniki reverberating with the sounds of her voice, as well as the voices of the other Arab Divas, Oum Kalthoum, Warda al-Jazairia, οr Asmahan, as I was discovering the Great Orient through those voices...
