I just received a rather disconcerting email from the Mira Theatre Guild, located at 51 Daniels Ave, in Vallejo - It seems that the current board of directors are now calling the historic Guild, the Bay Area Community Cultural Center. The Mira Theatre Guild has been in operation since 1947 and has a rich history of live theatrical presentations. The non-profit status and bylaws of this 501(c)3 organization stipulate that, in the name itself, it must be specific to its functions. Mira is a Theatre Guild and not a Cultural Center. With the performing arts suffering as they are in this difficult economy, it is a shame that such a historically significant organization would abandon its dedication to live theatre in favor of a neighborhood-specific gathering place. This discourages organizations from outside of the locality from bringing their productions, the interest, and the income to our already arts depleted town. As a producer of theatre in Vallejo, my disappointment is shared with many actors and technical people who will no longer find the Mira Theatre accessible as a theatrical organization. The costs of producing theatre at the Mira building have, in recent years, been artificially escalated to exclude community theatre groups wishing to perform in the space, and this final re-naming is just another launch in the wrong direction. ~ Jeff Lowe
