I just returned from a chemistry (catalysis) conference. This was the very best conference EVER among the dozen or more I had attended over the last 50 years (OK, only 30 years for me). The organizing committee -- ahem, your truly -- put on a program which featured chemists and engineers (and maybe the occasional physicist, biochemist, and sustainablist [a word I hereby claim for the Chair of ORCS]. We had large contingents from Finland, Holland, and Germany, the oral presentations were excellent, and the posters were the best in at least 12 years. So why was I not happy? In past years, I got excited at the science; discussed the vision, statistics, long-term significance, how to apply...all those wonderful thoughts, with the intention of trying out new ideas in my own labs; and share our results with people who would profit from our knowledge. But...I just retired. I dont think I can commandeer a lab, and I sure-as-tootin cant commandeer the lab scientist. Ill write a report to my hand-picked successor, and keep away. But its not the same.
