I just returned from a screening of The Immigrant with a good friend. What a powerhouse performance from Marion Cotillard (Oscar winner for La Vie en Rose - 2007). Such an expressive face and such incredible depth in her eyes. She could say as much with an expression as she could with a line of rich dialogue. I was completely mesmerized by her outstanding performance as a young Polish immigrant swept up in the mean streets of 1921 New York. Gorgeously photographed with a very finely tuned eye for rich period detail and surrounded by a restrained and beautiful score. The performances by co-stars Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner are quite fine. The film concludes with an ending shot that has got to be one of the most amazing and heartbreaking images I have seen on film in quite some time. What more can I say?
