I just saw an interesting line: “The Church doesn’t forbid drinking $100 bottles of wine during Lent, but it’s contrary to the spirit of Lent.” I once paid nearly $ 100 for a bottle of table wine. I immediately felt, if not exactly “guilty”, at least disappointed in myself for having spent that much money on something so ephemeral. I put the bottle away, thinking that aging the wine would make my decision seem less egregious over time. Well, I came across the bottle a few years after moving to Michigan, and don’t ya know, the blighter had corked! I was left with a hundred dollar bottle of gritty vinegar. Served me right. I poured out the refuse, but I saved the bottle; most folks would not notice it amid my books downstairs, but I see it nearly everyday, and I use it to remind myself not to be such an idiot. At least in that regard.
