I just saw the craziest thing, and I now understand the origin of the term a murder of crows. Right on the street outside my office window, I saw a murder of about six crows, and, literally, five of them were beating up on the sixth one, which was on its back on the ground, looking like it was not going to make it. This was not a mating ritual. These crows were violently pecking and clawing at the victimized bird. Finally, the murder broke up and they all went their separate ways, one of them with what looked like a piece of apple in its beak. I sniffed around on the internet and apparently one of the reasons for the term murder of crows is old folklore which told of groups of crows essentially holding court over members of their flock that had committed offences. If they decide against the defendant crow, then the rest of the flock swoops down on it and kills it. Im sure thats what I saw happening. The condemned crow was granted a reprieve, but he had been judged. Has anyone else seen this behaviour?
