I just showed this heartwarming Christmas classic to Lorien and Brendan. The story takes place before, during and after a Christmas party for orphans given by washed-up vaudeville star and widow Rosie Miller (Shelley Winters), who now goes by the moniker of Aunt Roo. Her daughter died years ago under mysterious circumstances, but Katy (Chloe Franks), one of the orphan girls at the party, reminds her of her daughter in many ways, much to the consternation of Katys protective brother Christopher (Mark Lester, star of OLIVER!)... Part of the hag horror cycle that came in the wake of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (1962), this is one of my all-time faves, and contains one of Shelley Winters best performances; she never once seems like shes acting. Nobody goes slowly batshit crazy like Shelley. The trailer plays up the thriller elements, but its actually much more nuanced and literate than you would think, and is quite brilliantly inspired by Hansel And Gretel. Highly recommended.
