I just visited the Reading Market Basket store for the first time since the settlement. It hasnt missed a step. It was stocked and busy with customers. I am very happy with the outcome. Not the least of my happiness comes from the fact that my nephew has found a career with the store. It will be interesting to see what happens to Stop and Shop in Reading. It is located right next to Market Basket. It flooded with customers during the troubles. It was hiring during the protests. Will it return to a place with semi-deserted aisles? The opening of Market Basket had a severe impact on its business.. It is part of a big chain. So it perseveres. Reading had a family run grocery store, Atlantic Food Mart. It closed after Stop and Shop opened. It had already closed its North Reading store. It couldnt compete with Stop and Shop and called it quits. An apartment building now sits on the site of the former Atlantic Food Mart. My office is in the next building. I used to be able to run next store for groceries for the office. I walk to work most days and shopping now involves a little more planning. Its worth the extra half mile to shop at Market Basket. I hope all turns out well for Market Basket, its employees, customers and owners.
