I just wanted to say thank you again for all the suggestions and thoughts about giving my dog allergy shots. After a few days of training, we did the first one last night. It went perfectly, the only one who messed up was me bc i forgot after inserting the needle to check for blood. Other than that, it went super smooth and he didnt even notice it. Sticking with the make him safe theme, we did the training in the bedroom with the door closed away from the other dogs. I did lots of baby steps leading up to just getting the practice syringe near his back. He was way below threshold and enjoying the training. With me sitting beside him, my husband in front (w clicker and treats) and Turk on the bed, we worked up to a verbal cue. Then Turk put his head down on the bed, I reach over, pull the skin up, injected the med, rubbed the injection site. allergy shot complete! We did a bunch of practice runs before hand with a syringe (no needle) and pushed on the skin w the capped syringe... So when it came time to do the actual injection he barely noticed. Then, we did a bunch more fake injections to kind of mush the real one into the middle of the training .I am just so happy with how it went and how easy it was. Didnt expect it go the smoothly!! We never could have done it without the files, posts, comments by everyone here at fearful dogs! I really really appreciate it. He still has a loooong way to go, but today Im going to celebrate the success of his first allergy injection!
