I just wanted to share this with everyone in this group since it has a lot to do with Clinton and Sampson Co. history. Monday, March 31st, will be David and Jeannie Kings last day at the Sampson Co. History Museum. For the last 17 years David and Jeannie have given their heart, soul, knowledge, blood, sweat, tears, laughter to this Sampson Co. treasure. When it began it was, well I (like a lot of others)really didnt know what it was because I guess at the time I really didnt see the point. What did Sampson County have that was worthy of the cost, time and trouble a museum would be? Over the past few years, I have come to realize, just how wrong that sentiment was. In large part, due to the commitment and dedication of these two truly outstanding people. They have sacrificed so much personally for this institution so that it might become what it is today. Anyone who has never visited, truly, has no idea the treasures of our past history that are held within the walls of the 9+ buildings that make up the Sampson County History Museum. I sing this praise with a bit of a heavy heart though. One reason is that these two will no longer be there to share their wealth of knowledge about all of the exhibits that are shown throughout the grounds with the many people who visited. Second is the fact that our county leaders have not seemed to be aware of (or care) what we were losing and the impact it was going to have when those two were no longer there. David and Jeannie have given plenty of notice of their intent yet no one has been put in place so that they would have time to be taught and trained by them before they left. Jeannie shared with me yesterday that this week she had to turn down two schools that wanted tours in the upcoming months because there would be no one there to do it. Hopefully this will just be a speed bump in the continued growth and betterment of this great Sampson County resource. If any of you see David or Jeannie (doing their part and then some, for other worthy local causes) please be sure to tell them THANK YOU for all they have done for the Museum AND Sampson County!
