I keep meeting people in their early to mid twenties still working on putting out their first comic book. Looking back, Im very proud that Past Rachel pushed herself so hard to self-publish her first graphic novel on the cusp of turning 19--then did another one a few years later. A lot of people get so bogged down in the process, they never ship. I used to say there are two kinds of people in the world: doers and bullshitters always talking about what theyre going to do. Now that Im older, I can see that this is a personality thing: people are too scared to ship something that isnt perfect, keep retooling the story because they dont know when or how to quit, never feel they got it right because no one is giving them real, honest, hard feedback. Shyness, perfectionism, cowardice, pride, apathy, ignorance, isolation, protectionism, low self-esteem: many complex things keep a person from doing. And Im fortunate enough to be able to muscle my way through them enough to have things to show for myself. Its the fear of being a bullshitter that rouses me from the ineffectual sleep of Comfort and keeps me chasing the mechanical rabbit of True Happiness. My only wish is to keep moving and doing. If past performance is anything to go by, I will have something to show for this company Ive started.
