I keep seeing people posting all those parents who are befuddled by the seemingly overly difficult common core math questions, so I just have to say something. Everyone is asking, why cant we do it the easy way? Why cant we do it the same way we used to? The answer is simple : because it is the easy way. Yes, that way will get you the answer, but do you know how or WHY you got the answer? No, probably not. Americans for the most part dont understand how or why they do certain things in math, they just do them. Well, that just isnt good enough anymore. You need to know how to manipulate numbers and why you are manipulating them in that way. You need to be able to think, not just compute. Being able to only compute is why we are so behind the rest of the world in math. If you dont like the new way of doing math, then dont use it. But then I dont want to see or read that you are upset that we are so far behind countries like China in math. Furthermore, we are teaching multiple ways to get to the same answer because not everyones brain works in the same way. What might seem like the easy way to you might make no sense at all to another.
