I know I’m treading on sacred racial ground to compare anything - TopicsExpress

I know I’m treading on sacred racial ground to compare anything that happens to a white person to an unspeakable evil that happened to a black person, especially when that someone is 14-year-old Emmett Till. But these days it seems it’s necessary to make stark comparisons in order to get the attention of some people. Three teenagers were charged with killing Australian student Chris Lane last week “for the fun of it.” The alleged attackers are black. “With a motive that’s both chilling and simple — to break up the boredom of an Oklahoma summer — three teenagers randomly targeted an Australian collegiate baseball player who was attending school in the U.S. and killed him for fun, prosecutors said Tuesday as they charged two of the boys with murder.” By now you know that Oprah Winfrey has compared the self-defense shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman to the bludgeoning death of Emmett Till that took place in Mississippi in 1955. Black actress Stacey Dash criticized Oprah for the comparison and then quoted a line from Malcolm X: “If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”
