I know everyone has their own opinions of ObamaCare, but heres our story: My husband and I purchased a private health insurance policy for him several years ago since he is self employed and it was more affordable than adding him through my employer. The plan also covers our daughter. We did our research and chose a plan that fit our needs and our budget. We did the responsible thing and made a choice as we are (were) free to do. Last week he received a letter from his carrier stating that his plan would not be compliant with the new Affordable Care Act. He has a choice to maintain his current coverage or change his plan to be in compliance. Sounds scary at first... So we start reading the coverage he has versus what the new compliant plan will have... Starts looking good... Lower individual and family deductibles, lower out of pocket caps, no max visits at providers offices, but co pays and coverage %age remain the same. Sounds ok, right. NOT!!! Next comes the monthly premium difference.... It is MORE THAN DOUBLE what we are paying now. So, heres the issue for us. Its no longer affordable in our budget, but if we dont change and keep our current coverage and plan we are no longer in compliance and will be fined thousands of dollars. And here is what frustrates us the most. We chose a plan best for our family. We are healthy. Very rarely need to see a doctor for more than an occasional physical or strep throat every few years. So our higher deductibles and out of pocket amounts were not so important in our case- but we were at peace that if something catastrophic happened resulting in significant medical bills, we would have coverage and avoid significant debt. But with no one having health problems and very rare doctors visits, the increased coverage and decreased deductibles are not worth the double in our monthly premiums which are now out of our budget... So working hard, being middle class, and being responsible citizens with health insurance that fits our needs results in paying double, throwing off our budget, or being fined??? I hate politics and avoid political debates and rants for the most part. But this hit home for the Carlo Reyes family.
