I know everyone is tired of hearing about politics. I called both - TopicsExpress

I know everyone is tired of hearing about politics. I called both of my senators and congressman about something I am passionate about and got a response. Together we can make a true change. Does this make me a hippie activist? ToCongressman Chuck Fleischmann Congressman Fleischman: Thank you for your response and overview of your perception of gmos. The USDA, FDA, and EPA are infiltrated by executives from Monsanto and other biotech companies. This poses as a huge conflict of interest in what is best for Americans. I understand money buys influence. Most other countries outlaw gmos or at least require labeling of the product. If I was proud of something I made, I would want the world to know! Why the deliberate deception? Looking at your voting record, are you a part of the problem or the solution? I have voted for you and have supported you in the past. I appreciate your time and concern for your constituents and all of America. John R. Your input is appreciated, and I am honored to represent you in Congress. As you may know , GE agricultural products are currently regulated by the United States Department of Agricultures (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). APHIS is required by the National Environmental Policy Act to conduct an environmental assessment of GE seeds and crops before they can be cleared for commercial use . This review assesses the potential environmental risk which might accompany commercial level production of GE crops. Upon conclusion of the review, APHIS can cle ar GE products for deregulation which is the final step required before commercialization. Concerns have been raised regarding several recent legislative initiatives seeking to alter the APHIS deregulation process for GE agricultural products. In several recent bills, language was included which directed the Secretary of Agriculture to allow the growth and sale of GE crops upon deregulation, regardless of if a federal court has placed an injunction . Proponents of t hese legislative initiatives, widely known as the Farmers Assurance Provision , claim they are needed to protect farmers and agricultural companies from constant and abusive legal complaints. At this time, no legislation containing the Farmers Assurance Provision has been signed into law. The development of genetically engineered crops has provided the ability to feed more people at a lower cost. I believe that we must continue to develop new and innovative ways to keep food supply affordable for the millions of food insecure people across the world. Additionally, the growing world population demands new solutions to ensure an adequate food supply. H owever, it is imperative we ensure that new breakthroughs in crop development do not harm consumer health or the environment. Although I am not a Member of the House Committee on Agriculture, my staff and I are carefully monitoring activity related to genetically engineered crops and related legislation. I assure you your concerns will be in kept in mind should any pertinent legislation reach the House floor. Once again, thank you for your input and please do not hesitate to let me know if I may be of further assistance. Sincerely, Chuck Fleischmann Member of Congress
