I know my friend and brother, Kipkogei Agui wont like to hear this about his employer, the People Daily Newspaper but let me try him. The idea of a free newspaper in the west is a good one. There have been so many free magazines and newspapers for a long time. You pick most of them outside subways on you way to and from work. My friend, David Mbiyu and I once published the first ever Kenyan diaspora newspaper, The European East African Time in London as early as 2002. It was a free periodical. In Kenya, the idea of a free copy is alien. People here no longer believe in free lunches. They want to spend money on what they believe is important to them. They think that anything, which is given for free is either poor or sub-standard. It is something being discarded. Whether the free People Daily will beat this belief, become a breakfast table paper for all in Kenya remain to be seen. But I wish the paper and her readers all the best. I am happy to be going for my daily copy. Otherwise, the publishers and editors of People Daily might just have provided butchers with acres of free wrapping material. But there is nothing wrong for a rich company like the publishers of the People Daily supporting struggling small traders like our down town butchers. That is patriotism! Over to you my brother Noah!
