I know some of my friends don’t like ‘political’ posts, but the independence referendum isn’t about politics – it’s about us taking control of our country and our lives (and the lives of our children and grandchildren). The latest British unionist scare-story, announced today by Tory UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, is that if we vote for independence every one of us will be £2,000 worse-off. It’s designed to frighten people. The truth is that £2,000 is a cumulative figure spread over 30 years – which works out at £1.29 a week – and is only relevant if we believe the Tory Chancellor can predict what the economy will be like in 30 years time. This is the man whose predictions for this year and next year have had to be revised because he got them wrong. This is also the man who has made most of us worse-off – much more than £2,000 worse-off – as a result of his government’s savage cuts to wages, benefits and services, and by imposing policies such as the Bedroom Tax. Independence is simply Scotland becoming a normal nation, taking control of our resources and building a better, fairer country.
