I know that everyone feels very strongly about leaving pets out in the cold....me, included! We all want to steal dogs and yell and scream at the idiots who leave them out in the freezing cold to suffer and possibly die. But, lets stop for just a minute and perhaps appeal to their common sense. ( I know it seems like they dont have any) I have a very large...VERY thick coated Golden Retriever/Chow mix...but, common sense tells me that the warmth from that coat will only last so long! I have two others....a pit....VERY short haired and a beagle....she has a little bit of a heavier coat, but still not as much as RustyBo. These two get cold very quickly. More common sense....the pads on their feet are NOT like boots are to humans. And, just like humans....our temperature is greatly affected by our outer extremities....hands and feet....or in the case of animals....paws! Have you ever walked outside when its very cold and it takes your breath away? Even the act of breathing in very cold air for extended periods of time can be detrimental to the health of humans AND pets! Again, common sense! I dont believe that there is such a thing as an outdoor dog. Of course they all love to go out and explore and get some fresh air and play in the snow....but, you can bet...they all would love to come in and enjoy the warmth of a fireplace or a warm, soft spot to relax in. Isnt that just common sense? And, yes...they can get hypothermia...frostbite....and freeze to death! Just like people. Common sense! For those people who will not bring them inside....at the very least....give them shelter from the snow and wind and put down straw....do not put blankets out...they will absorb moisture and not only become frozen, but will not help keep the dog warm. Just put yourself in that pets place....would you want to be out in the cold? These animals are family...would you treat your children like this? Common sense! If you cant treat your pet like family....perhaps its time to realize that you shouldnt have one! So, Ill put another log on the fire for Sadie....make sure Nicki is covered up with her favorite blanket and although, RustyBo gets a little warm inside...he lays on the tile floor in the mud room....but, they are all safe, warm and very loved....just like family. Common sense! This is my morning, these are my dogs and I am blessed.
