I know that for many, memories of childhood are fond, innocent and so uncomplicated. Time and distance will do that to a lot of memories. As a military brat, I was exposed to different types of people every time we moved or whenever a new family arrived. I was also raised in the decade right after the civil rights movement and it was stressed so very much that all people are worthy of dignity and respect. But even with us, kids could be cruel. When I was 10, there were two sisters from an atheist family. One of them was in my class. She didnt stand or place her hand on her heart or recite the pledge. I dont know how it was for her little sister, but we were so awful to her. From what Ive heard, in many cases, the pledge has been replaced with a moment of silence in which a child could internally ponder whatever they thought appropriate. Personally, and as a very patriotic person, I think thats much better. Heres to remembering that those innocent times werent always so innocent.
