I know that many of you have been anxiously awaiting the results of Willies competion in Georgia. We were extremely fortunate to have a Lily Cafe member who just happens to be living there now. Many thanks to our dear friend and now Georgia correspondent, Carol Barona. Carol wrote many wonderful notes keeping me up to date on the competition and here is one of my favorites. I am sure there will be more to come. Well, Willie won her world title in dead lift, at 77, lifting 215 lbs. She was the oldest contestant there by 5 years...male or female, and she is a pistol. She played to the crowd...she was the most photographed and the most hugged, and the one most often engaged in conversation....learned some new stuff....she is self-taught, and is all-natural....no belts, no wraps, no salts, no powder on hands or back, just Willie marching up to the weights and doing it....she weighs 100 lbs. and lifted 50 lbs. 42 times (you have to lift half your weight as many times as you can in 2 minutes). Nobody else went 42, not even the teens who were lifting in the 50s and 60 lb range.... I do not know whether I was more thrilled at being in her presence, or she was more thrilled that two former Rochesterians were there to cheer her on....I sure liked the attention she brought us! Willie sure shared her shine....She was the perfect ambassador for Maplewood Y(there were private gyms, and trainers, and a Police Athletic League group, and folks from Puerto Rico and Brazil--though some, I believe, trained locally). She was the only one who wore Y gear. Congrats Willie, we are so proud. And thank you from the bottom of our hearts Carol for these fabulous photos. Once a Lily member, always a Lily member. We love and miss you so.
