I know that this topic might be a bit too close to home for some of my Facebook friends. But private for-profit colleges and universities are creating major problems in this country right now. These career training schools bombard TV, websites, and city buses with slick ads promising high-paying careers. But in reality, they are often a bad deal for students, and some are simply scams. Such schools often charge exorbitant tuition rates, have under-qualified faculty members in many cases, and tend to lack sufficient accreditation. And most problematically, many students who attend such for-profit colleges and universities often accumulate huge student loan debts, due to high tuition charged, combined with generous financial aid from the government at various levels. Do you want to know what is really astounding and unjust? For-profit private colleges and universities in Iowa receive more assistance from the state government per student than do public community colleges! And the same thing is true in many other states across the country. Some of these for-profits are under investigation for fraudulent practices.
