I know theres a lot of hand-wringing and groaning going on this morning, and a pervasive attitude that electing Republicans to office is a sure formula for disaster - but I like to remind people that when Republican Dwight Eisenhower was elected president in 1953 (ending years of Democratic control of the White House) - it was he who sent Federal troops into the Democratic controlled deep south (and segregated south, btw) to force the states to comply with court ordered integration - some at the time called it political suicide, but I for one have always been grateful for his integrity. Would a Democratic president have challenged his fellow party members as boldly? Perhaps, or perhaps not - maybe the people knew what they were doing - that is, after all, the premise behind democracy - Im not saying that none of these newly elected will ever screw things up - the more recent ins have done their share of that too, seems to me - what I am saying, is, give them a chance to do the right thing - some of them might just surprise you. Or, put it another way, maybe have a little faith in the American way?
