I know this house This is a house I have dreamed of. I have seen this house in my dreams and in my waking moments, in the middle of the night, I have constructed, deconstructed and reconstructed this house over and over again in my mind. I know the sizes, placements and layouts of the rooms. There are two bedrooms on the first floor, separated by a bathroom, and on the ground floor there is a kitchen which openly connects to the living and dining area. All rooms take up the depth of the house. The house is in the hills below the mountain so all rooms have a view of the plain below. So from every room you can see everything in the plain below; from the two bedrooms you can see all things and from the bathroom you can see these things the same. And on the ground floor, from the living room and the kitchen you can also see all these things in the plain below. And you can sit in the garden and look at the plain below. And from the rooms in the house and the garden you can look at the plain below in the middle of the day towards the sea and you can see against the ascendant sun, the fields separated by roads, by tracks, by rivers and by canals, defined by the roads, the tracks, the rivers and the canals; field next to road next to field next to track next to field next to river next to field next to canal next to field. Fields of maize, fields of vines, fields of olive trees: maize in massed ranks, vines in orderly rows and olives in squadrons, in fields separated by roads, separated by tracks, separated by rivers, separated by canals; straw coloured maize fields, vines of darks green and silver-grey-green olives. And along the roads and alongside the tracks, at the side of the roads and the tracks, are rows of trees. On the plain there are rows of trees at the side of the roads and tracks. At the side of the roads and the tracks there are poplars and horn beams and beeches, shading the roads. And at the side of the rivers and canals there are more trees. And the trees along the sides of the roads, along the sides of the tracks, along the sides of the rivers and the sides of the canals emphasise the boundaries between the fields; between the fields and the roads, between the fields and the tracks, between the fields and the rivers and between the fields and the canals. And up the hill, towards the house, the olive groves mingle with cypresses. And you can see the houses on the plain below; isolated workers cottages, farm buildings in groups, houses on the edge of towns and the houses of the larger cities, all outposts in the landscape, on the plain below. And you can see how the houses mark their domains and form little groups and migrate to make the larger towns and cities. And how in the larger towns and cities the groups of houses are joined by larger civic buildings and churches with towers reaching to the heavens. And you can see how the the houses and groups of houses and towns and cities and civic buildings are defined by the roads and how some of the roads are lined with trees to emphasise the separations. And all these things can be seen from the garden of the house and from all the rooms in the house against the ascendant sun in the middle of the day. And yesterday I saw that house. It is real and has a place to be...
