I know we all have our own memories of family and friends whom have sacrificed for our Country during times of conflict. Memorial Day and memories of my Grandfather, Charles C. Moore, 1919-1979. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in the 1930s and thought he died and went heaven, coming from Depression era Georgia. Then, when the second World War broke out, being a Chief Petty Officer, he was reassigned to the U.S. Navy and made the initial landing with the U.S. Marines on Guadalcanal in, at the time, the British Solomon Islands, where Japanese army,, naval, and air forces had established a strong foot hold as they planned to invade Australia. The campaign for Guadalcanal was the first time in history where the United States Armed Forces became engaged in land, sea, and air battles at the same time. My grandfather told me that he would lay on the beach, at night, and watch naval cannon fire as both American and Japanese forces would attempt to resupply themselves under the cover of darkness. Part of my grandfathers job was to run a small landing boat back and forth from resupply ships to shore. My grandfather remained on Guadalcanal until October 1942, when he was evacuated, suffering from shell-shock from Japanese naval gunfire, scorched clothing from the gunfire, and malaria from which he never fully recovered. My Grandfather, Charles C. Moore, passed away in 1979 and I just know that he was a casualty from his time on Guadalcanal.
