I know weve been here before. This was our visit in 2010, with my neighbour John Rose sharing the driving to Plymouth from Birmingham, to collect the Jack Hargreaves archive from the South West Films and Television Archive (SWFTA). Dave Knowles, long term colleague of my stepfathers, helped. Here he explains part of the production process that has so stymied recovery of this unwieldy material - films by Stan Bréhaut but no commentary. Only right near the end of the clip do you see a box of reel-to-reel tape (4.02). A few years back before wed recovered this material and Id paid Endemol for full rights in Out of Town and dug out the deep filed letter in which one of their people had clearly written they had no further claim on Out of Town, I wanted to perpetuate the belief that the OOT material in the archive was unrecoverable - a mishmash of old 16mm film in rusty cans and loose tapes in cardboard boxes. I played down the fact that for some insightful reason Jack had in fact ensured that his commentary from start to finish of each OOT episode was recorded on 1/4 reel-to-reel magnetic sound tape. So tho we have no images of Jack in his studio shed we do at least have his commentary before the location film runs and his commentary continues - live in the studio at Northam. Stans location film, as Dave explains, has sound effects dubbed on, but not Jacks voice. Our task is one of synchronising those sound tapes of Jacks voice to those films, after first of all matching film-can to tape box https://vimeo/40226507 This is the material that a precious minority of dear (tho mainly virtual) friends on these pages are struggling to restore to life.
