I know you all have seen this by now but just want to share my personal experience of this production. Why Nasira. Shes a social reject who has been abused and labelled from a very early age. She was a frightening figure during my childhood. As I grew up she didnt seem moya but rather a strong character who has survived on the streets despite the daily barrage of ridicule and harassment. Weve heard all kinds of rumours about her but not a word from her. So this was intended to put a human face on her and give her a much needed voice once and for all. One little chat and she was more than willing to tell her story on camera. Her only condition was to pay her something, which we did. She doesnt use a phone so we had some difficulty getting hold of her but other than that, it went smooth. She turned out to be an easygoing, cheerful and humorous person. As youll hear in the video we had a good laugh during the interview. Shooting this, with colleague Yasir at Hulhevi Media, was interesting. Imagine the amount of curiosity itd generate following her around with a camera in the most crowded areas of Male. Heard one saying, These guys didnt find anything better to shoot. The sort of sentiment were trying to address here. The response to this video has been overwhelming. Its great to know she enjoys much more support than I even imagined. Looking at the feedback, this has provoked a thought and she has found renewed respect. Thats what makes the effort worth it. For instance some friends who used to call her Moya Nasira has switched to Nasira. As she doesnt use internet we did promise to go show this to her on the laptop. So a little screening in market area is up next.
