I left Buffalo NY and headed up to Alexandria Bay and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Having grown up on the Great Lakes the thought of where all that water went, and where all of those oceangoing ships came from, has always been an enigma for me. So today was the day I was determined to see for myself. All I can say is that its one big ass river with a thousand islands in the middle of it! Its as impressive as the Mississippi River, and way more beautiful. So I traveled along the St. Lawrence for a few hours until the Canadian border forced us to part ways. My destination for the night was Burlington VT but I got a little twisted up at Lake Champlain. I was merrily following my navigator when its bouncing blue ball wanted to swim across the lake. And no, it didnt offer any clues as to how. I surveyed the land based options and they werent appealing. So I proceeded to the edge of the lake and discovered a ferry landing. Brilliant! An unexpected adventure had landed in my lap. But now the problem was the last ferry of the day had set sail fifteen minutes earlier. Nuts! Too early in the day to stop and no reputable looking motels in sight, I grudgingly made my way to the freeway and headed for the town of Lake George. Burlington will have to wait to be discovered another day... The Adirondack Mountains were a whole other kind of beauty. Im a big fan of the Sierra Nevada and the Rockies. Soaring peaks, redwoods ponderosa and oaks, and snow capped peaks. So gently rolling ridges and deciduous hardwood trees reaching as far as the eye can see was a different vista for me. Its a little early in the year for the trees to be at the peak of their Fall color riot, but they were still awesome.
