I like Maria Sharapova. She keeps her nose clean and stays away from controversy. She handles her business appropriately and on the tennis court, shes an excellent player. But shell never beat Serena as long as Serena is healthy and fit. And I know why. It has little to do with tennis balls and racquets. Thursday afternoon in Miami, Serena beat Maria for the FIFTEENTH CONSECUTIVE TIME!!! For the most part, the matches arent even close. And it isnt always a dominant Serena imposing her will over Maria. As was the case yesterday, Maria was beat before she took to the court. She was hitting balls consistently into the net. And unfortunately for her, Serena rediscovered her serve; a serve considered the best in womens tennis history and better than most of the mens. The contest was close on a game to game basis, right up til the last few, when Serena realized she had a cab waiting for her with the meter running. Then she quickly dispatched Maria with her powerful serves and imposing groundstrokes. By the middle of the last set, the outcome was no longer in doubt. And so now Serena is embarking on her 7th championship in this venue, which is now called the SONY Open. But it really doesnt matter what a match is called.
