I like to recommend probiotics to my acne and rosacea patients. Many different potentially useful probiotic organisms exist, including both bacteria and yeast. Their effects are very specific. Certain strains appear to be helpful only for certain conditions--that is, some bacterial strains are better for diarrhea and others help inflammatory conditions of the skin. I recommend that my patients try to get their probiotics from real food first, such as sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt with live cultures. Otherwise, daily capsules containing Lactobacilli and/or Bifidobacterium have been shown to help rosacea and acne patients.
