I liked this post from Jean-Philippe Jaworski, the author of the French role-playing game Te Deum Pour Un Massacre, about the attack against Charlie Hebdo yesterday. I translated from the French and slightly rephrased for the English reader: France is struck at the heart. Because in our culture, satire is a tradition that is in fact much older than the Revolution. Ever since the 12th century, troubadours and jugglers have produced lyric poetry with strong satiric and/or anti-satiric overtones. Satirical works are consubstantial with the formation of the French spirit. Pamphlets and caricatures spread throughout the country as soon as the printing press was invented . Satire is a great French tradition: Villon, Rabelais, La Fontaine, La Bruyère, Voltaire, Jarry, Daumier are all Classics. An old and respected conservative newspaper, Le Figaro, once had its debuts as a satirical newspaper... Kill Satirists, and you commit a crime against the French spirit itself. We should remain true to that spirit, French (or Francophiles, for our friends from the rest of the world): Let us not become blinded by the provocation, the grief, the anger. To this crime against the French spirit, we must reply with that very same spirit. Thats very well said.
